Almost every Amazon listing I audit has a how-to-use image. Most of them are doing the wrong job.
The typical version is a three-panel grid. Step 1, a hand holds the product. Step 2, the hand does something vague near the product. Step 3, a smiling person enjoys the result. Numbers in circles, a thin arrow between each panel, and a caption like "Easy to use!" at the top.
I've looked at more than 14,000 hero images and a lot more secondary stacks than that, and I can tell you what that frame answers: nothing. It shows that the product can be used, which the shopper already assumed. It doesn't answer the question that actually made them swipe to it.
Amazon how-to-use images aren't instructions. Nobody learns to use a product from a listing image. What the shopper is checking is how much effort this thing will cost them, and whether they're capable of it. That's a different brief. It produces a different frame, and it fixes a different return reason.
This is the playbook for building instructional images that do that job.
What a how-to-use image is actually for
Instructions belong in the box. The listing image has to answer the question the shopper asks before they buy: "Is this going to be a hassle, and am I going to get it wrong?"
That question shows up in four ways, and each one needs a different image:
- Effort. How many steps, how long, what tools. "Assembly required" is one of the biggest unspoken objections on Amazon, and the page usually answers it with a single line in the bullets.
- Capability. Can I do this? The buyer of a smart lock is wondering whether they'll need an electrician. The buyer of a sourdough starter kit is wondering if they'll kill it in a week.
- Correct use. What happens if I use it wrong? This is where "doesn't work" returns come from. The product was fine. The shopper skipped a step the listing never showed.
- Ongoing effort. Setup happens once. Refilling, charging, re-applying, emptying and resetting happen every week for the life of the product.
The generic three-panel grid tries to cover all four, so it doesn't answer any of them.
The practical test is simple. Look at your how-to-use frame and ask which of those four questions it answers. If the honest answer is "it shows the product being used," the frame is decoration.
The return reason your instructional image is supposed to prevent
This is the part most brands never connect. Pull 90 days of FBA Customer Returns on your top SKU and read the comments on the "defective / does not work properly" code. It's a messy dataset, since most buyers leave the comment blank and the rest type fast and angry. You're not running a study. You're looking for the same sentence three times.
On a surprising share of listings, a big slice of "defective" returns isn't about defects. It's the shopper describing a use error:
- "Doesn't stick" on an adhesive product that needs 24 hours to cure.
- "Leaks" on a bottle whose seal has to be seated before the first fill.
- "Won't connect" on a device that needs a 2.4GHz network.
- "Stopped working" on a rechargeable that needed a full first charge.
- "Doesn't get hot" on an appliance with a preheat cycle.
Each of those is the same event. The product needed one step the shopper didn't know about, and the listing didn't show it. Amazon records it as a defect. You pay the return, lose the unit if it comes back opened, and sometimes eat a one-star review saying it "doesn't work," which reads to the next shopper like a quality problem.
I don't have a controlled study on how much of a given catalogue's "defective" rate is really use error, and I'm not going to invent a percentage. The number varies wildly by category. What doesn't need a study: if the same use-error sentence appears three or more times in 90 days of comments, that sentence is your instructional brief, and in most stacks there's no frame answering it.
That changes the brief completely. The how-to-use image is no longer "show it being used." It's "show the step people skip."
The five instructional frames worth making
These are the frames I build, in rough order of how often they're the right answer.
1. The critical-step frame
One step, shown big. It's the one that causes returns when skipped: the cure time, the first charge, the seal, the preheat, the network band, the orientation.
Rules:
- One step, not a sequence. If the frame shows five steps, the critical one gets 20% of the attention.
- State the consequence. "Wait 24 hrs before hanging, or it won't hold" works better than "Wait 24 hrs." The consequence is what makes the shopper remember it.
- Use a number where you can. Hours, minutes, degrees, pounds. A number gets remembered and "allow time to set" gets skimmed past.
- Heavy type. This frame will be seen at thumbnail size in the image block on mobile and after resampling and JPEG compression. Thin type loses stroke detail first. Pick the heaviest cut in the brand family that still looks like the brand.
This frame also does something for the shopper who is still deciding. It tells them you know how the product fails. That reads as competence, and competence is persuasive.
2. The effort summary frame
This one answers "is this going to be a hassle?" in one glance. It's closer to a spec strip than a storyboard:
- Time: "Assembles in about 15 minutes"
- Tools: "Allen key included" or "Phillips screwdriver needed (not included)"
- People: "One-person setup"
- Skill: "No drilling" / "No wiring" / "Plugs into a standard outlet"
Be honest here. Honesty is what makes this frame valuable, not the icons. If assembly takes 45 minutes, say 45 minutes. A shopper who expected 10 minutes and spent 45 leaves a review that mentions it. A shopper who was told 45 and did it in 40 leaves a review saying it was easier than expected.
Time it yourself. Get someone who has never seen the product to assemble it with a phone timer running. Don't use the factory's number or the engineer's number. The person who designed it will do it in a third of the time.
The "tools not included" line is the one brands resist, and it's the one that matters most. Finding out you need a tool you don't have after the box is open is one of the most reliable sources of one-star reviews in home improvement and furniture.
3. The honest sequence frame
When the process genuinely has several steps and the shopper wants to see them, show a sequence. But build it properly:
- Three to four panels maximum. At thumbnail size, a six-panel grid is six unreadable postage stamps. If the real process is nine steps, group them into three stages.
- Photograph the real hands doing the real step. Not a generic hand hovering near the product. The frame should show the moment of effort: the twist, the click, the press, the pour.
- Crop tight. Each panel needs to read on its own at about a third of the frame width. Background, face and countertop don't earn their space.
- Write captions as verbs. "Twist to lock" instead of "Secure attachment system."
- Put the critical step in the sequence visibly. Give it a different panel colour, a warning icon, or simply bigger type.
Numbered circles and arrows are fine. They're not the problem with the typical version. The problem is that the panels are too small and the actions too vague to read.
4. The before-first-use frame
Some products need a one-time preparation that isn't part of normal use: soak the wooden board, season the pan, wash the bottle, charge for eight hours, calibrate the scale, run one empty cycle.
This deserves its own frame because it happens at the moment of maximum return risk. It's the first time the product meets the customer, still well inside the return window, and the customer has no history of it working.
A shopper who knows about the prep step thinks "that's normal." A shopper who finds it in a folded leaflet after the product smelled odd on first use thinks "this is defective."
5. The ongoing-use frame
This is setup's neglected sibling: what using it looks like in week six. Refilling the reservoir, emptying the bin, replacing the pad, charging the battery, cleaning the nozzle.
I wrote on LinkedIn recently about how almost no stack shows the product being cleaned, even though the buyer spends more time maintaining most products than using them. The ongoing-use frame is where that lives, alongside refill intervals and charge life. For replenishment products it's also where the repeat purchase gets set up, because showing the refill makes the refill look easy to buy.
Where instructional images belong in the image stack
Placement depends on how much the use question matters to the purchase. My working rule:
Slot two or three when effort is the objection. Furniture, smart home, anything with installation, anything labelled "assembly required," and anything where the category's reputation is "fiddly." If shoppers in your category are primarily asking "can I do this?", answering that in slot five means most of them never see it. In most stacks, far fewer people reach slot five than see slot two.
Slot four to six when use is simple but has one trap. A water bottle doesn't need a sequence frame in slot two. It does need the "seat the seal before first fill" step somewhere a considering shopper will see it. Mid-stack is fine.
A+ when the sequence is long. A+ content has the vertical space for a four-step walk-through that would be illegible as a single square. The image stack gets the critical-step frame and A+ gets the full sequence. This follows the general split: the stack answers the questions that decide the click-to-cart, and A+ holds the depth for people who scroll.
Video when the motion is the point. If the step is a technique, like a wrist motion, a latch that needs to be pressed at an angle, or a specific pour, a 15-second clip does in five seconds what three panels can't. Keep a still critical-step frame in the stack as well, because a lot of shoppers never press play and most autoplay is muted.
The sequencing mistake I see most is the how-to-use frame parked at slot seven by default, because it was the last asset produced. It was produced last because it got briefed last, and it got briefed last because nobody on the approval call thought of it as a selling image.
Photographing how-to-use images without a big production
Instructional frames are among the cheapest images in a stack to make well, because authenticity beats polish. A slightly imperfect real hand doing a real step is more convincing than a perfectly lit render.
What you need:
- One window, overhead lights off. Mixed colour temperatures make amateur photos look amateur far more than resolution does.
- White foamcore as a bounce. Under $20.
- A braced phone. Use a tripod or a stack of books. Every panel in a sequence should be taken from the same position so the only thing that changes is the step.
- Real hands with neutral nails and no jewellery. The hands are a scale reference whether you plan it or not, and anything decorative pulls attention off the product.
- Shoot the mistake too. For the critical-step frame, a split showing the wrong way next to the right way can be clearer than the right way alone. Label the wrong one plainly.
If a generated human hand ends up in any of these frames, remember the New York synthetic performer disclosure rules I wrote about on September 1. A photographed real hand avoids that question entirely. For instructional frames, a real hand is also just better, because shoppers are looking for proof that a real person did this.
Writing the copy: the machine reads this frame too
Instructional images carry more text than most secondary frames, so the copy has two readers.
The shopper at thumbnail size needs a few words in heavy type. One headline per frame, captions of two to five words, verbs first.
The machine layer (Rufus, Amazon's own AI summaries, third-party agents, and search) reads text, attributes and alt text more reliably than it reads pixels. A shopper asking Rufus "is this easy to assemble" or "does it need tools" is asking something your effort summary frame answers visually. Unless the same facts exist in text fields, that answer may not reach the machine.
So for every instructional frame:
- Put the facts in bullets as well. "Assembles in about 15 minutes with the included Allen key, no drilling" is a sentence shoppers search for and models can quote.
- Fill the attributes. Assembly required, number of pieces, tools included, installation type, power source. A blank field is an absent answer, not a neutral one.
- Write alt text on A+ modules that says what the step is ("Step 2: twist the lid clockwise until it clicks"), not what the image is ("lifestyle image").
- Use literal language on the image. "No drilling needed" transmits to both readers. "Effortless setup experience" transmits to neither.
How-to-use image anti-patterns
The mistakes I see most often:
- "Easy to use!" as a headline. It's a claim with no evidence, and every competitor makes the same claim. Show the time, the step count or the tool list instead.
- Six-plus panels in one square. Unreadable on a phone. Group into three stages or move the sequence into A+.
- Vague hands. A hand hovering near the product isn't a step. Show the action at the moment it happens.
- The smiling-result panel. The final "enjoy!" panel with a lifestyle photo takes up a third of the frame and answers nothing.
- Hiding the tools. "Screwdriver not included" in 8pt grey. The shopper finds out anyway, only later and angrier.
- The factory's assembly time. Fifteen minutes for the engineer is forty for the customer. Time a first-timer.
- Leaving out the critical step because it sounds negative. "Must cure 24 hours" feels like a weakness to the brand team. For the customer it's the difference between a working product and a return.
- Illustrations that don't match the product. Line drawings from the manual reused as listing images often show an older version or a different colour. If the drawing doesn't match what arrives, it creates a "not as pictured" doubt.
- Instructions only in the video. Most shoppers don't watch it, and autoplay is often muted. The critical step needs a still frame.
A 30-minute audit for your instructional images
Run this on your top three SKUs by contribution:
- Pull 90 days of return comments on the "defective / doesn't work" and "not as described" codes. Highlight any comment that describes a step, a wait, a setting or a tool.
- Group the highlights. Anything appearing three or more times is a critical step.
- Swipe your stack on a phone. For each critical step, find the frame that shows it. Write down its slot number, or "none."
- Check your effort facts. Does the stack say how long setup takes, what tools are needed, and whether it's a one-person job? Do the bullets say the same thing?
- Read your Q&A section. Any question starting "does it need…" or "how do you…" that has more than one answer is a frame you haven't made.
- Check your attributes for assembly required, tools included and installation type. Fill the blanks.
On most listings the audit finishes with a short list: one critical-step frame to make, one effort line to add to an existing infographic, and a handful of attribute fields. It's a phone, a window and an afternoon, not a photoshoot.
FAQ
Do all Amazon listings need a how-to-use image? No. If using the product is genuinely obvious and your return comments show no use errors, a dedicated instructional frame wastes a slot. A throw blanket doesn't need one. But check the comments before you decide. Plenty of "obvious" products have one step people skip.
Should how-to-use images include text? Yes, but less than you think. One headline and captions of a few words, in heavy type. Secondary images allow text and graphics, unlike the main image, which has to be the product on pure white. If the frame needs a paragraph to make sense, it's the wrong frame.
Is a how-to-use video better than an image? For techniques and motion, yes. For a single critical fact like a cure time, network band or tool list, a still frame is better, because a lot of shoppers never press play. Most listings that need one need both: a still for the critical step and a video for the full process.
Where should instructional content go: the image stack or A+? Put the step that decides whether someone buys (or returns) in the image stack. Put the full walk-through in A+. The stack is seen by more people and A+ has more room.
Can I reuse diagrams from my instruction manual? Only if they match the exact product the customer receives and they're readable at phone size. Manual line art usually fails both tests. It's drawn to be read at arm's length on paper, and it's often a revision behind the current product.
